Itelazpi, the public company responsible for managing the deployment of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) in the Basque Country is working to provide a signal to the 1,738 citizens (0.08% of the population) who as yet do not receive a signal, through using new repeaters or via satellite.
99.92% of Basque citizens, a total of 2,170,437 people, have access to DTT, whereas 0.08% (1,738 inhabitants) do not receive the signal as they live in the so-called "grey areas".
That is the term by which the areas the digital signal does not reach are known due to their peculiar orography. In the Basque Country, it would refer to places where farmhouses lie scattered in mountain areas.
To resolve the issue, when in the area in question at least four farmhouses are grouped together a repeater will be installed, whereas when there are less than four the signal will be sent via satellite.
It is worth highlighting that the transition from the analogue signal to the digital signal has been carried out in a straightforward manner and which, furthermore, has been a success because it has meant that other
autonomous communities have used the Basque standard as a model.
