Telefónica will double mobile broadband capacity in major Basque population centres

This year Telefónica will increase its mobile broadband capacity in the three Basque capitals and 14 major Basque population nuclei, reaching transmission capacity of up to 8 megas.

Regarding fixed broadband, they said they installed 270,000 ADSL lines in the Basque Country in 10 years, and foresee mobile broadband reaching that figure in 3 or 4 years.

According to Telefónica, mobile broadband development in the Basque Country has gone from ‘strategic’ for the company, which has over 1.8 million accesses in the autonomy, including their landline, mobile, broadband and Imagenio customers.

In the Basque Country the company has 270,000 lines with ADSL, providing virtually ‘universal’ fixed broadband reception in the ACBC. Their infrastructures include a network of over 100,000 kilometres of optic fibre and 1,086 mobile telephone bas stations. Furthermore the company will complete its 430 million euro investment plan in the Basque Country.

Telefónica highlighted the increased experienced by data traffic services via broadband on mobile telephony terminals in the Basque Country in the last year, which have doubled likewise that of the same characteristics recorded via laptops, which tripled in the same period.
