The number of internet users has grown over 3% in Gipuzkoa in the last quarter, the largest increase of all the Basque Country (ACBC), and covers almost 52% of the total territory population. As latest data from the Basque Statistics Institute (Eustat) indicate, regarding the first quarter of the year.
This increase in users although lower is not generalised throughout the ACBC; in Bizkaia the number of surfers has grown 2.5% (51.8% of its inhabitants over 15 are net users). However, in Araba there has been a slight drop of 0.5%, and the percentage of surfers is 51.25 of the population.
As for global figures for the ACBC, there are already 950,000 people using the net generally, 51.7% of the total, i.e. an increase of 2.3% in relation to the last quarter of 2008.
Likewise worthy of mention is the increase in users between 55 and 64 (10.6% in relation to the last quarter of 2008). Not to mention that detected among the inactive and unemployed, of almost 20%, which is more than 1 in 5 users in the ACBC. And the survey provides another fact: 52.6% of users are men against 47.4% of women.
It should also be mentioned more and more Basques purchase online: according to Eustat data – 236,600 in the first quarter of 2009, 25% of its users (6,000 more than the previous quarter).
Preferred Internet access place is still the home (85.4%) according to the survey which has also detected an increase in those surfing in English (8.2%) and a slight drop in those surfing in Basque (3.2%).
The report concludes the average duration of connections in the ACBC is 50 minutes.
